WHO IS C. I. SCOFIELD AND HIS REFERENCE BIBLE?

Scofield’s life reads like a bad soap opera.  He was a liar, scoundrel and con-artist.   He was consumed by his own importance and showed no repentance to the end of his life for all his bad deeds.

During the early 1890s, Scofield began styling himself Rev. C. I. Scofield, D.D.; but there are no records of any academic institution having granted him the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree.

He is not a theologian.  He was a lawyer, highly intelligent but well-known as a master self-promotor. These characteristics led him to his career as a politician.  Soon he was forced to resign "under a cloud of scandal" because of questionable financial transactions, that may have included accepting bribes from railroads, stealing political contributions and securing bank promissory notes by forging signatures.
Jailed on forgery charges he was sent to prison where he became a Christian but even after he became a Christian, he took possession of his mother’s house by falsifying his mother’s deeds.

He deserted his wife and two little girls (he was a heavy drinker) and refused to support them or acknowledge their existence when he became a pastor at the congregational church in Dallas. Thanks to the assistance and encouragement of some powerful preachers he produced His reference Bible with footnotes despite his lack of formal theological training.
It is this reference Bible with footnotes which have been the cause of the concept of the spreading of “premillennialism”.

WHAT IS PREMILLENNIALISM?

Premillennialism means that the true believers will not be tested during the time of tribulation.  Instead BEFORE the time of tribulation they will be “raptured” or fly up to meet Jesus on the cloud.  It is called pre-millennialism as they believe that after the wrath of God there will be the Armageddon which is "won" by Christ and the start of a millennium or thousand years of Peace.

WHAT IS POSTMILLENNIALISM?

This was a great change from the understanding of Christians during the first 1900 years who believed in post-millennialism which means everybody will suffer during the time of tribulation and AFTER (post) that time Jesus would return.

It was largely through the influence of Scofield's notes that premillennialism became influential among fundamentalist Christians in the United States, and these notes became a significant source for popular religious writers such as Hal Lindsey.

WHO IS HAL LINDSEY?

Harold Lee Lindsey (born November 23, 1929) is an American evangelist and Christian writer. He is a Christian Zionist and an author and television host. He is most famous for writing a series of popular apocalyptic books suggesting that “the end is near” and “the rapture of the church” was likely to occur in the 1980s. His books were translated into 54 languages and sold more than 35 million copies. His books helped expanding the evangelical churches with more than a million of newly saved/reborn believers.

THE GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT

Hal Lindsey’s, The Late Great Planet Earth (1970), was not the first book on Bible prophecy to assert that we are living in the last days. For centuries, Christian writers have used the Bible to predict the Return of Christ. The Seventh Adventist Church was established thanks to  Miller who calculated based on that the Return of Christ would come in 1844. By 1844, over 100,000 people were anticipating what Miller had called the "Blessed Hope". On October 22 many of the believers were up late into the night watching, waiting for Christ to return and found themselves bitterly disappointed when both sunset and midnight passed with their expectations unfulfilled.  One of the Adventists, Hiram Edson (1806–1882) wrote "Our fondest hopes and expectations were blasted, and such a spirit of weeping came over us as I never experienced before. It seemed that the loss of all earthly friends could have been no comparison. We wept, and wept, till the day dawn” This event later became known as the Great Disappointment.

SUMMARY

To summarize, we explained how an initially obscure network of preachers and their followers reshaped American beliefs. Perceiving the United States as besieged by Satanic forces they took to the pulpit and airwaves to explain how Biblical end-times prophecy made sense of a world ravaged by global wars, genocide, and the threat of nuclear extinction. Believing Armageddon was nigh, these preachers used what little time was left to warn of the coming Antichrist, save souls, and prepare the nation for God's final judgment.
Following 9/11, the politics of apocalypse continued to resonate with an anxious populace seeking a roadmap through a world spinning out of control. Premillennialist evangelicals have erected mega-churches, divided Chrsitianity further and brought focus of the millions of believers not on Jesus’ main teachings of love, forgiveness, and mercy but on elitism, a kind of special salvation for themselves alone.
White evangelicals have played a major role in recent political campaigns.
Despite their impact in American politics their attitude does very little to deal with the real problems, global warming, racial prejudice, the enormous inequality between rich and poor, the proliferation of nuclear weapons and other problems we are facing in this century.

The Rapture, a term nowhere found in the Bible, is believed to be the return of Christ at which time he raises only the sainted dead and takes them to heaven with the Christians who are living at the time. The Tribulation is a seven-year period of fierce wrath upon the earth. Annihilation of the planet narrowly is averted by the Revelation of Christ in which evil is destroyed and a 1000 year reign on earth ensues. (1000 years = millenium)

As we will see in the next article, pre-millennialism and  the rapture is an intricate twisting of the scriptures in general and the books of Daniel, Ezekiel, Zechariah, and Revelation in particular to make this preconceived story seem plausible.

We find already a warning about twisting the epistles in II Peter 3:16 " …in almost all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, among which are some things that are hard to understand, which those that are ignorant and unstable twist, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction" .

Note: Baha’i history proves that 1844 is not the time of the GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT but a TIME OF REJOICING as it is the beginning of a new era, initiated by the BAB in Shiraz, Persia in 1844  In Christianity Renewed Volume 3 we explain in detail the following verse (Matt: 24) where Jesus speaks about His Return:

Immediately AFTER THE TRIBULATION those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.”

It is easy to start a war but it is very difficult to end a war…

In my previous article I explained how there is a palpable danger that fundamental Christians in high positions who subscribe to the belief in the Rapture will be more likely to take us into a conflict that precipitates into the third World War or Armageddon.
I have shared my concerns that we are now witnessing disturbing signs mainly in the United States where evangelical Christians have been “tweeted” into highly placed positions in the Government thereby being decision makers affecting the entire planet.

The most dangerous concept of evangelical Christians is their belief in the Rapture.

Rapture is based on the proposition that before the great tribulation Jesus will return on a cloud and at that time all true Christians will suddenly disappear from earth and meet Jesus on the cloud and be taken up to Heaven. Those who are "left behind" will be subjected to the wrath of God. Tribulation is interpreted as a time of oppression: wars, earth quakes, wars, starvation, and contagious diseases.(see Christianity Renewed Vol 2)

Armageddon is often portrayed as the ultimate war where the army of true Christians supported by Jesus Christ (who only preached love your neighbour) will fight the army of evil (Satan, the devil).

The far-fetched literal interpretation that Jesus would first do a fly-by of planet Earth to snatch away his true believers before the time of tribulation sound like the script of a Hollywood movie …but sadly enough it has now become a very popular belief in this Century.

History of the rapture

(Please visit my website www.christianityrenewed.com for more details)

The Origin (1907):

Scofield reference Bible 1200x630 reduced 25 60KbIt all started in 1907. The Bible interpretation of the Rapture (originally preached by a Plymouth Brethren J.N. Darby) had a very humble beginning in the footnotes of the Scofield Reference Bible.

Gradually many Protestants who read the Scofield Reference Bible uncritically accepted what its footnotes said and adopted the rapture doctrine, even though no Christian had heard of it in the previous 1800 years of Church history. (Jesus never mentioned it – see Christianity Renewed Vol. III)

This idea of the Rapture became very popular due to the horror of World War I (1914-18), the scourge of the Spanish Flu (1918-20), the Great Depression (1929 -39), World war II (1939-1945) were all considered signs that the Time of the End or the close of the age had finally arrived. Sales of the Scofield reference Bible exceeded 2 million copies after World War II.

Another reason for the spreading of the Fallacy of Rapture was the rise of Fundamentalism. Christian fundamentalism, a movement in American Protestantism that arose in the late 19th century is a reaction to modern science, especially Darwinism (see Scope trial) which is the theory of biological evolution which is very different from the Book of Genesis.

In the twentieth century most people are content to get their knowledge of religion through books, movies and TV shows.

reduced 50 rapture left behind movieFor example a popular series “Left Behind” tells the story of the end times (set in the contemporary era), in which true believers in Christ have been "raptured" (taken instantly to heaven), leaving the world shattered and chaotic. As people scramble for answers, the secretary-general of the United Nations, (who is the Anti-Christ) is promising to restore peace and stability to all nations. The series sold more than 80 million copies. Also a number of rapture movies were made with popular actors as Nicolas Cage.

Many people are at present full of fear for the future. The rapture is a modern equivalent to the “Deus ex Machina” as used in ancient Greek drama’s.

The Rapture fallacy is now promoted by powerful TV preachers. Trusting naive Christians give millions to their preachers to make sure they will be accepted as true Christians. Some preachers in mega churches have been able to amass more than a billion US$... and worse of all in 2019 some of the most powerful politicians in the world believe in the Rapture.

Next we discuss who Scofield is. (He is not a Bible scholar. He was convicted for falsifying documents and he was a master self-promotor) why the Rapture as interpreted by evangelical Christians is not in accordance to the Bible.

How a wrong interpretation of the Holy Bible (Rapture) could cause a Third World War!

A well-known Bible scholar said: “There is a palpable danger that people in high position who subscribe to the belief in the Rapture will be readier to take us into a conflict that brings on Armageddon.”

In 1947 a group of prominent scientists established what is called the Dooomsday clock.  Every year they meet to take a non-political, realistic evaluation and in 2019 they have set the time of the doomsday clock on 2 minutes before midnight.  This has only happened once before in 1956 at the height of the cold war. (to see the reason for their decision: click on https://thebulletin.org/doomsday-clock/past-statements/

When you read the conclusion of these scientists, including 14 Nobel Prize winners, it is observed that it runs parallel with the fourth paragraph of the 18 January, 2019 message of the Universal House of Justice the supreme body of the Baha’i Faith

. “Thus do the powers of disintegration regroup and gain ground. So be it."

What is happening at present in the United States and other parts of the world is extraordinary to say the least, in the doomsday message it is called “the new abnormal” which could lead to a great conflict in the Middle East that if left unchecked could easily spill over into a much larger war between superpowers.

The present Middle East policy of the United States is largely influenced by the end of times rapture scenario of the Evangelical Christians.  This connection is very evident now with the preparations for the upcoming election with a President who is very dependent on the Christian vote whereas 60% of white evangelical Christians voted for him last time.

The newly appointed Secretary of State went on a global Rapture tour in January 2019.

  • He is the third highest official after the president and vice president (who is also an evangelical Christian)
  • He is principally concerned with foreign policy.

One recent article of this global tour, quoting the unbiased reporting of the Guardian, a well-established British newspaper (January 2019) reads as follows:

“In setting out the new administration’s Middle East policy, one of the first things Mike Pompeo, the newly appointed Secretary of State and chief diplomat made clear to his Muslim audience in Cairo is that he had come to the region as “as an evangelical Christian”  Just as he did in Cairo, Pompeo called on the congregation of a Kansas megachurch three years ago to join a fight of good against evil. “We will continue to fight these battles,” the then congressman said at the Summit church in Wichita. It is a never-ending struggle … until the rapture. Be part of it. Be in the fight.”

reduced 20 rapture paintingFor Mike Pompeo and millions of evangelical Christians, the rapture evokes an apocalyptical Christian vision of the future, a final battle between good and evil, and the second coming of Jesus Christ, when the faithful will be saved and ascend to heaven and the non-believers in Christ will left behind and suffer the wrath of God before they are sent to hell for all eternity.

CONCLUSION: Here is an explosive mixture: A foreign policy not based on reality but on the fantasy of evangelical Christianity and a president who want to be re-elected (at all costs) . As we have seen in the past (Vietnam, Iraq) some reasons have to be found to justify via the media and world opinion why it is now necessary to start a new military conflict in the Middle East with unimageable consequences.  (Continued)

UNDER CONSTRUCTION !!!  ( 6 jULY 2019) -

Before Armageddon, before the Second Coming, there will be the Rapture.

As the world’s attention turns to a battle beginning in Israel, prophecies foretell that living men and women will suddenly vanish, as the Bible says, “into the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.”

Before Armageddon, before the Second Coming, there will be the Rapture.   As the world’s attention turns to a battle beginning in Israel, prophecies foretell that living men and women will suddenly vanish, as the Bible says, “into the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.”.

This is a tremendous and very dangerous claim.

The Rapture is now commonly understood to refer to a time when believers will be snatched up to heaven by Jesus to escape the time of tribulation about to engulf the earth during the reign of the Antichrist. This chain of events has become so integral to some Christian end-time theories that it’s often assumed they’re clearly explained in the Bible, especially the book of Revelation. Thi is no true

As we discussed earlier The idea of a “pre-tribulation” Rapture, where believers disappear and everyone else is left on earth to suffer, is actually a rather new one. For 19 centuries “rapture” had referred to the second coming of Christ in general, rather than the supernatural escape from troubles as portrayed by Left Behind.

For 19 centuries people based there belief in the Return of Christ on a few gospel texts as for example:

Mathew 24 verse 29 Immediately AFTER THE TRIBULATION those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the of powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, And they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

It is very clear that Jesus says : AFTER the tribulation ... Son of man is coming in the clouds of heaven.

So how did this version of the Rapture come about?

The mention of an event where believers are “taken up” into the sky in the Bible primarily comes from Paul’s First letter to the Thessalonians. In 1 Thessalonians, Paul is dealing with the fears of believers whose loved ones have died and who are afraid of what will happen when Christ returns. After telling them that the dead shall rise, Paul offers them this:

Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever.
1 Thessalonians 4:17

Sky yes, but no tribulation, no Antichrist.

Other passages from the Bible are seen as supporting this idea, for example, Matthew 24:40–1 and Luke 17:34–35, which speak of one person being taken and another left behind. However, these passages discuss the second coming of Christ (the Parousia), not an escape from the world. The “blink of an eye” idea is taken from is 1 Corinthians 15:51–52. But none of this is from Revelation. And none of it lays out a clear Rapture, tribulation, Antichrist plan.

The book of Revelation does not specifically mention this pre-tribulation Rapture prior to the Antichrist’s reign, either. Revelation 3:10 is the text most cited as describing it:

Because you have kept my word of patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.
Revelation 3:10

However, this occurs in a letter to a specific church, Philadelphia, rather than as part of the visionary material. References to this having any connection to “the Rapture” in scholarly commentaries are few and far between. And Revelation 3:10 doesn’t mention being taken up into the sky or the Antichrist.

ANTICHRIST:

Actually, the book of Revelation doesn’t use the term Antichrist at all. That term comes from 1 and 2 John. The beasts of Revelation are taken by many to be the Antichrist, as thought to be predicted in Daniel 7. But none of them is called Antichrist.

Other ascents to heaven by certain figures are mentioned in Revelation (John the Seer, the two witnesses, the child of the woman clothed like the sun), but these do not describe huge groups disappearing prior to the plagues, sufferings and terror which inflict the earth.

By this stage it becomes clear that the Rapture is far from an obvious and widespread concept in the Biblical text. Indeed, creating the idea of the Rapture, let alone its timeline, involves harmonizing many disparate parts of the Bible and presents the Bible as a prophetic tool. It involves reading the book of Revelation in relation to other texts, rather than reading what is contained in Revelation. Reading the Bible as having a blueprint for the future

put it into practice to create their own Rapturous chain of events, which is now often presented as the only possible version.

However, the idea that Jesus’ sayings, Paul’s teachings, John’s Letters and John of Patmos’s Revelation, not to mention the texts of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Daniel, represent the same branch of"end of time theory"  is something few scholars would maintain. These texts were written in different locations and time periods, to different people, with different goals.

A “one end-plan fits all” attitude proves more than problematic, as richly diverse ancient texts are streamlined to an ordered modern timeframe of Rapture, tribulation and Antichrist.

The reality of the Rapture in the Biblical text is somewhat different. It’s the common concept of the pre-tribulation Rapture that is an oversimplification, a blurring of the complex texts and ancient worldviews. It is a modern creation assumed to be part of the final book of the Bible. But the book of Revelation doesn’t offer its readers the Rapture...

What is the meaning of RAPTURE and TRIBULATION?

For those people who are not familiar with Bible terminology,

  • Rapture is one of the many interpretations of the Bible.
  • Rapture is based on the proposition that BEFORE the tribulation Jesus will return on a cloud and
  • At that time all TRUE Christians will suddenly disappear from earth and meet Jesus on the cloud and taken to Heaven.
  • Those who are "left behind" (Title of movie!)  will be subjected to the Tribulation by the devil ...
  • Tribulation means a time of wars, hunger, starvation , diseases etc.
  • Armagheddon is the ultimate war where the army of true Christians   supported by Jesus Christ ( who only preached love your neighbour) will fight the army of evil (Satan, the devil).

It sound like the script of a Hollywood movie …but sadly enough if a falsehood (as happens in the time of Bush using weapons of mass destruction argument to invade Iraq, the greatest enemy of Iran)  is repeated constantly it can be used as a form of brain washing to influence the masses by the media.  The Rapture falacy is now  promoted by powerful TV preachers, media (many movies made about this topic) .  Simple minded Christians give millions to their preachers to make sure to be accepted as a true Christians.  Some preachers in Mega churches have been able to amass more than a billion US$...

CONCLUSION: An explosive mixture: A foreign policy not based on reality but on the fantasy of evangelical christianity, a president who want to be re-elected ( at all costs)  and .. last but not least ... a new national security adviser (appointed in a tweet) John Bolton, a welknown extreme war hawk.. John Bolton (who still believes that the war in Iraq was a great success - He thinks he is never wrong)  is now nesting in the offices of the White House and circling around the world to search out his prey... His favourite saying is: To achieve peace, prepare for war.

No wonder the doomsday -clock monitored by nuclear scientists  (including 14 Nobel price winners) is put  on 2 minutes before mid-night, the closest to midnight since 1956 (the cold war).  Reasons for their decison are found at https://thebulletin.org/doomsday-clock/past-statements/.

But there is still a glimmer of hope:

-  New global governance structures are desperately needed

-  Create a global grassroots coalition ( youth are the future) committed to advancing a more peaceful future, one based on scientific inquiry, rational debate, and fewer nuclear weapons.
More details will be discussed in another article.

TESTIMONIALS for CHRISTIANITY RENEWED Volume I,II,III,IV and V

Due to their direct and simple (but profound) direct style, the “Christianity Renewed” series is ideal for teaching the large rural Christian population… It is very helpful for answering the doubts of Catholics. (Dr. Peter Khan, former member of Universal House of Justice)

Christianity Renewed’s excellent presentation explains how the original spiritual truths based on the words of Jesus Himself, under the weight of traditional authority crystallized into doctrines, until the true teachings of Jesus became clouded over by obscurantism, bigotry, narrow mindedness and prejudice.   David Hofman (former member of the Universal House of Justice)

CHRISTIANITY RENEWED MADE ME BAHA'I.....SERIOUSLY!!!! Great for people from  a Christian background. These books were the last TESTAMENT to my search.. being from a strong Protestant church background.  These books built BRIDGES FOR ME and LINKS between Christ and Baha'u'llah.
I became drunk with happiness and love from the discovery of the TRUTH...THANK YOU BAHA'U'LLAH...Forever Thankful
  (Dr Taralina Gae'e-Atefi, Samoa)

I was a Lutheran pastor in Vanimo, Papua New Guinea. I studied Theology in Germany.  I tried to revive Christianity but failed.  It was a humbling experience.  I prayed to God: “Not my will but Your Will be done” .   Initially I opposed Baha’i Faith but Christianity Renewed opened my eyes, showing a new way to reconcile science and religion.  It was difficult for me to become a Baha’i as the Lutheran church gave me salary, house and car.  But I knew the Baha’i Faith was the truth.  I left the church, became a Baha’i and returned back to my small village.  No money, no job, no prospects.   I had to start again… but his time “armed with the Power of Thy name  nothing can ever hurt me, and with Thy love in my heart all the world’s afflictions can in no wise alarm  me” (Abe Bodick, Papua New Guinea)

"Teaching the Faith in Solomon Islands is challenging. It was only after reading “Christianity Renewed” that we saw new ways to teach about Baha’u’llah in relation to Jesus.  These books were so simple, direct and comprehensive that everyone could understand them. We have a high rate of illiteracy (87%) across the nation, so having a text that is easy for people to understand is essential (Joyce and Don Boykin, former NSA members, Solomon islands)

I was a practising Catholic when I began reading Christianity Renewed resulting in my discovery of  an awakened spirituality offered by the Baha'i Faith.  The books helped explain  Divine truth of progressive revelation, love and service to humanity encouraged in each dispensation and the reality of our own eternal selves.  Even though I felt the truth of the Baha'i Cause resonated within, I still had many questions and loyalty of the heart for my Christian traditions. Through reading the books Christianity Renewed and discussing them, all of my questions were answered and more. I was enlightened and enkindled by the deep knowledge, exploration and explanation of the relationship between the two faiths in the books. (Mary-Kait Hunter, psychologist, Australia)

I was a dedicated Christian before I became a Baha’i.  Christianity Renewed empowered me in my own spirituality that it was not a matter of cutting my loyalty to Christianity by enlisting as a Baha'i, but actually strengthening my admiration for Christ, the validity of Christianity and the timely renewal of its sublime message for mankind - peace, love and justice. (Debrani, A.B.M. Papua New Guinea)

I like Maxwell Alexander’s Christianity Renewed as it is a series of booklets that illumines a path through the jungle of different interpretations, which have splintered the Faith of Jesus into over 50,000 different denominations and sects.  Clearly and succinctly, the author brings to light the glorious news of the promised “Return”, illustrating his discussion with verbal and pictorial imagery.  (Dr Yvonne Ingrid Woźniak , Poland)

I found the books to be a comprehensive yet a simple treatment of a very profound Theme.  The Bahá'í Perspective on the Faith of Christ. I highly recommend them to: "promote a dialogue between Baha'is and Christians". David Takagi (Hawai)

The “Christianity Renewed” series has changed our lives. It has been a blessing that we can share this simple but profound understanding of the truth with others in over 20 countries over the past 30 years. (Co- author Helen Vloeberghs, Australia)

“Christianity Renewed” presents a modern understanding of Christianity for a world coalescing into a global society in which the followers of the world’s great religions are confronted by the exclusivist claims of each religious tradition. (John Walker, Australia)

Christianity Renewed has been an indispensable guide to my deeper understanding of Catholicism and the Baha’i faith. (Dale Emerson, Lawyer, Belgium)
